Yargina Z. - Masterpieces of Jewish Art. Wooden Synagogues

There was a time when wooden synagogues, a unique phenomenon of East European Jewish art, formed and indispensable part of Stetls in Ukraine, Byelorussia and the Baltics. The two world wars erased them completely from the European landscape. And yet the picture of Jewish artistic heritage of the 17th through the 19th century will be deficient, if these monuments are disregarded. The book devoted to wooden synagogues is fully based on archive materials. The authors describe remarkable pieces of Jewish wooden architecture, classify them and analyze their typology and stylistic development. Presented in both English and Russian.
